It is just with the finish so it starts to break down, however the slap-upwards finale rescues it in the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you will wisely dialogued, it will have zero high challenge in living down their extremely ugly label.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Motion picture Bulletin told you “The movie movements on a simple rate, new dialogue try slick and you may characterisations essentially productive. Penis Powell and Evelyn Keyes direct new shed expertly, just like the investigator try used big aplomb of the see your face character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]

The latest film’s journalist and you may director, Robert Rossen, creates a multidimensional chess online game, for mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a great scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) has worked during the gambling enterprise and dated a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic program, the new cast’s suavely controlled gestures regarding like and you may menace, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can fashionably cocky pictures (plus his political conscience) get this to pugnacious but really intricate spectacle a hidden vintage of genre.” [ 10 ]

Ace shows by the Dick Powell, given that a gambling family overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, because the a police inspector, together with within the get . Whilst the patch comes after a familiar trend, brand new characterizations is new while the activities adequate so you can overbalance.
